Basic Math
Basic math skills and concepts for children
Although a computer or calculator can solve
most math problems in mere seconds, there is a benefit to
understanding basic math. By learning basic math skills and
concepts, your children will have a better understanding of
how math works and they will be able to rely on these essential
skills for the rest of their lives.
Children must understand the cumulative nature of math: the
fact that every mathematical skill learned is built on another
skill, that multiplication cannot be mastered without addition,
and that fractions are based upon the concepts learned in
division. Memorization is one of the most important skills
to develop in your child to increase their success in math.
Accomplishments in math depend heavily on an individual’s
ability to memorize basic mathematical rules and formulas,
ideas that can be called upon with little or no trouble.
You can engage your children in a variety of games that promote
both their understanding of math and their ability to retain
information. Flash cards can be a challenging and entertaining
activity for children, helping them to sharpen their ability
to memorize while introducing them to basic mathematical rules
and principles. You can purchase flash cards or make them
yourself and design them to test a child at any level of mathematical
education. Flash cards can also teach your child the importance
of memory by association, a skill that they will use when
solving math problems at school.
By connecting children with important basic math concepts
and skills at a young age and challenging them with interesting
games and discussions, you can prepare them for both their
academic and adult lives.
