Everyday Math
Creating an everyday math program for your child
As your child learns about mathematical subjects
in school, it is important to demonstrate how math is utilized
everyday. Mathematics has become increasingly important in
this technological age. Therefore, it is even more important
for your child to learn math at home, as well as in school.
Everyday math is used to follow a recipe, calculate sale prices,
and count change. Integrating an everyday math program into
your family’s life is a good way to show your child
the importance of math.
An everyday math activity for your child can be preparing
a meal from a recipe. Not only will your child enjoy helping
you cook, he or she will learn about fractions and quantities
by taking proper measurements of ingredients. Your will see
the benefits of using math by tasting the delicious results!
If your child loves to shop, consider making a trip to the
store for some bargain hunting. With a small amount of money
to spend ask him or her to compare the prices and quantities
of items you plan to buy. Your child will need to keep a running
tally of items and will benefit from this everyday math activity.
Another simple money-related activity is counting change.
Most households accumulate a significant volume of change
over a year’s time. Allow your child to be responsible
for the loose change – he or she can count and roll
the dimes, nickels, quarters, and pennies and take them to
the bank for cash. As your child grows and learns more advanced
math, open a savings account and allow him or her to track
the interest rate on the account. You can also open a checking
account with a debit card and be responsible for tracking
withdrawals and deposits as well as keeping the account balanced.
Everyday math is an important topic to teach your child because
when children can relate what they study in school to real
life; it will give them a better understanding of mathematical
concepts. Mathematics is everywhere, and every day is filled
with opportunities to help your child experience it. Both
of you will have fun as you participate together in an everyday
math program. |
