Math Projects
Ideas for fun math projects at home
A fun and interesting way to reinforce math
education is to develop special math projects. Unlike a worksheet
or a math game, a math project can be time and labor intensive
and last more than an afternoon. Math projects are an excellent
way for children to learn about math and understand how it
is incorporated into everyday life.
Speak with children and teachers about fun math projects.
Children will often have viable ideas about how they can incorporate
math into an area of their interest. Math teachers should
have a variety of resources on math projects and activities
as well. If children are interested in engineering, bridge-building
is an apt math project idea. Using toothpicks and rubber bands,
build a suspension bridge designed to support weight. Take
children to a library where they can read about the history
of bridge making as well as the methods engineers currently
use to build bridges. If children are interested in finance,
consider a shadow investment project idea. Teach them about
the stock market and how investments work. Have them choose
a portfolio of stocks and track them over the course of the
school year. With enough practice, they will learn how to
invest in the stock market while improving their math skills.
Remember that math projects can be as fun as you make them.
They can incorporate other disciplines like science and history
and inspire field trips to libraries, museums, or just out
into nature. With these projects, children will learn how
to appreciate math on an entirely new and exciting level.
