Math Puzzles

Fun math puzzles for children

Math puzzles are one of many ways to strengthen a child’s understanding of concepts learned in school. While math games and math toys might be geared towards children who need special help in math, puzzles can test the understanding of those children adept at the subject. There are many varieties of fun math puzzles on the market today for children of every age and grade level.

The many types of math puzzles include board and logic games, mazes, and tactile toys. Depending upon the type of learner your child is, you can hand-select a variety of puzzles to suit his or her specific needs.

Many board games serve as math puzzles that can help children understand important mathematical concepts. One of these games is chess. In order to succeed at chess, children must learn to implement strategy and complex reasoning, two skills that are very important in the study of math. Children might also enjoy a more complex math puzzle like a Rubic’s Cube. Children will learn to think spatially - keeping track of numbers and patterns on a three-dimensional plane by turning and twisting the cube to align colors in columns and rows.

More advanced math puzzles require children to use deductive logic along with their abstract reasoning. Since math is essentially a deductive science, it is important for children to develop their capacity for deduction. Consider introducing them to a math puzzle like Sudoku. Sudoku requires the player to place the numbers 1-9 in a series of boxes without repeating digits in rows, columns, or groups. The answer to any Sudoku puzzle can be reached logically; there is no guesswork involved.

Remember that your child’s success with math puzzles will lead to increased curiosity and motivation to challenge them academically and intellectually.
