Math Word Problems
Tips for solving math word problems
Math word problems involve the reading and
deciphering of a particular scenario to determine the math
equation that needs to be solved. Determining the math at
the root of a word problem can be extremely difficult for
a child. Success in solving math word problems is largely
dependent upon breaking the word problem into an equation,
solving the equation, and confirming the math to avoid an
incorrect answer.
Solving math word problems is like reading through a story
to find a plot or theme. You can teach your child to recognize
the important elements of a math word problem and how to assemble
those elements to find a solution. It is important to make
sure your child reads through the entire problem first. After
reading through the problem, help look for keywords that might
indicate what mathematical steps are necessary to reach a
solution. If you and your child encounter a term like increased
by or more than, the math problem will most likely involve
addition. Words like less than, fewer than, reduced by, decreased
by, or difference of indicate that the math problem involves
subtraction. If your child locates a terms like product of,
the math problem will probably involve multiplication. Keywords
for division may be out of, ratio of, or quotient of. Remind
your child that a word problem can involve more than one mathematical
skill. The next step is to translate the wording into a numeric
equation. Once this has been done, the equation can be solved.
In order to avoid wrong answers, it is good to work through
math word problems twice to see if you get the same answer.
There are also a variety of math games, math activities,
and math software available online and in stores that you
can purchase to assist your child in solving math word problems.
With enough practice, attention, and parental involvement,
word problems should be handled carefully and efficiently.
Success with word problems will improve abstract thinking
skills and your child’s overall understanding of math. |
